Bert Reid received his Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Mass. General Hospital in 2008. He received his Master’s Degree from URI in 1993. He graduated cum laude from Tulane University in New Orleans, LA in 1987, where he was the captain of the varsity golf team and Academic All-American. He was awarded the Tulane Academic Award twice, given to a student-athlete for academic merit.  The MGH Doctoral program is strongly centered on evidence-based clinical measurement tools.  These are applied to Biomechanical Functional and Sports Rehab at OPT.  Bert’s Compendium Papers were on the topics of case study of advanced foot mechanics relating to the kinetic chain and rotator cuff pathology and rehabilitation, primarily aimed at the throwing athlete.

Bert has taken over twenty-five advanced training seminars in specialized topics ranging from foot and ankle biomechanics, functional rehabilitation, Golf fitness certification through NikeGolf, performance training, rotator cuff/shoulder and throwing mechanics, mechanical low back and neck pain, Team Physician Sports Medicine, jaw pain, advanced orthotic fabrication through traditional methods as well as the AmFit Precise model, and many more.  Bert is trained in a specialized machine called the “OptoGait” which can measure digital running analysis, power, agility and balance. He is currently involved in research analyses for running shoes and foot mechanics that allows us to prove that one product or method is better than another.  He teaches an Elective Class at URI in the P.T. Grad Program entitled “Functional Gait and Running Research”.

In 2008 Bert completed a 10 month Fellowship in Functional PT Rehab and Sports Biomechanics through the G.I.F.T. Program of the Gray Institute. In 2019, he became Certified as a Functional Golf Specialist, the newest course from the Gray Institute, the most complete and esteemed program of its kind.  He has a NikeGolf NG360 Fitness Certification.  He also passed the exam of the Titleist Performance Institute Certified Fitness Professional. He conducts Golf Fitness Training seminars and classes, and he has lectured at Universities, at N.E. ACSM seminars and in health clubs and for civic groups.  He has worked directly with elite runners including Olympic Medalists, Div. 1 collegians, pro golfers and tennis players as well as Navy SEALS, Team Puma pro sailors, URI and Salve Regina Baseball pitchers and catchers and others.  Bert has also worked as the sideline medical care specialist for the Narragansett High School Football Team for over 20 years based on his training with the ACSM Team Physician courses.  In 2010 OPT and Bert were inducted into the R.I. High School Football Coach’s Hall of Fame based on the history of OPT’s involvement and donations with all of high school sports.  In 2013 he was inducted into the Providence Grid Iron Hall of Fame as well. In 2016 he was awarded the prestigious URI Distinguished Achievement Award given by the College of Human Sciences. He continues to play soccer, run, play golf, and to spend time with his wife Krista and their two kids, James and Julia.
